Bathroom Update

Because I know you're all waiting with bated breath for how it's progressing! LOL
I grayed out the mirrors because the reflection was distracting. We've decided, now that we see it, to change out the handles that came with the vanity. They don't really 'go' with the rest of the fixtures.
But it's all starting to come together!
The rubber ducky was Sammy's (our late, great Golden Retriever.)
I've know since the beginning of this whole project I wanted to incorporate it into the design.
I think it adds just the right touch, don't you?

Life's Simple Pleasures

The grocery store has started selling ‘miniature’ bouquets of flowers.
They are adorable!
Just a handful of color to brighten up a table top.

I’m not usually a flower person but I just couldn’t resist these.

So, of course, I had to try and sketch it, lol! With my new Lamy Safari pen.

Another Quick Sketch to Keep My Sanity

It really does help to sit down and sketch in the middle of this chaos.
I don’t really mind the mess. And it’s a good excuse to not have to clean…like I need an excuse, lol. But after a while you find you can’t hold a thought in your head and you get just a little bit cranky and short tempered with your significant other.

So I’ve been keeping my Big Black Sketchbook next to the Grandpa chair where I take refuge. And it helps to clam and focus me.
I have a lot more stuff on my keychain; I was just too lazy to draw it! lol
The pink thing holds my mini business cards (which I’m much too shy to give out….most of the time anyway.)

Another Sketch

In the midst of all this remodeling mess (and to escape the mayhem) I’ve been reading art books and watching YouTube videos.
Isn’t it funny how you can hear or read something a million times and then suddenly one day it just ‘clicks’?
DUH
Negative space.
I KNOW about negative space. I understand about negative space. I struggle with negative space.
Then I watched a YouTube video and in it she said ‘Don’t draw the object, draw the spaces BETWEEN the object. Think of them as objects themselves.’ And she demonstrated.
I suddenly GOT IT!

Yeah, I know…..I’m slow……move on!

So, as I sat watching TV I found myself looking ‘through’ this lamp and it dawned on me, I’m looking through the negative spaces!!!!!!

Eureka!

'LAMPY'
It’s wonky and not quite symmetrical but it has character somehow. If I had tried to draw the lamp itself I don’t think I would have gotten any of the proportions right!!

Son1 says it’s sad and I should turn it on to make it happy, lol.

Pencils could be made with erasers at both ends, but what would be the point?

'Lamp on a Chair'
It can be interesting to sketch the disarray of remodeling.

See, The Thing About Laying Tile Is……

It’s more about the planning than the execution.
If you want the tile to run from room to room seamlessly (and not end up with teeny tiny pieces along the walls or to fill in spots here and there) you have to PLAN.
A  LOT.
You have to measure and calculate and do MATHS! Lots and lots of maths!
And then measure again, just to make sure your first measurements were correct.
It sometimes helps to draw it out on paper, but not always.
And NEVER, I repeat, NEVER try and explain to your spouse how you came up with your calculations.
At least that’s how it works in our house……
And because we’re using the same tile throughout the whole house, in order to lay it in the master bath we have to start it at the front door.
Seriously!
So that the pattern is consistent as it turns corners and goes into other rooms, because if you started in the bathroom and came around the corner into the living room it would lay out all cattywampus.
And we don’t want that.

I get it.

I really do, but oy, have I got a headache!

Renovation 101

Things you need to know before tackling a DIY home renovation project.

Brought to you by the friendly people at Casa “HOLY SH*T THIS PLACE IS A MESS!”

It will involve heavy duty machinery! (And it will be LOUD!)

With LOTS AND LOTS of dirt, dust and debris!

There will be stuff heaped up in EVERY ROOM!

There will be sparks!

And massive amounts of insect feces!
We can only surmise this must have been from either a VERY large family of insects or possibly many generations of said insect family!!!!
And before you ask, no, it is NOT the dead insects themselves!
Home renovation is FUN!

The Domino Effect of Home Renovation

Aka: One thing leads to another….
Or……
Things never go as planned…..
Or, holy crap this place is a mess!

We’re still working on the master bathroom.
It’s just Husband doing the work and he’s no spring chicken anymore so it takes a while. I’m fine with that. Besides, sometimes he has to wait for me to make the design decisions…… (It took me almost two weeks to decide on which gray I wanted for the paint color!!!!)

But it’s progressing!  YAY!

Just not necessarily in the way we planned.

We decided to tile the entire house. Well, all except the bedrooms, we’re not animals!!!
And we thought, for traffic pattern issues, it would be a good idea to tile from the hallway into our bedroom and around the corner to the bathroom.

All was going well, steps planned and executed in a timely fashion.
Here, I must interject to tell you that Husband is……organized. I mean in the ‘we’re going to do this, then this, then this’ kind of way.
So as we were pulling up the carpet in the bedroom to get ready for the tiling extravaganza to come he popped up a tile from the hallway by accident.

I mean it POPPED up! Easy peasy! In a way that had us looking at each other and wondering what had been holding it down for all these years.
We had already planned to rent the HUGE JACKHAMMER-Y MACHINE that would chip up all the tile in the house. It would be worth the cost in the long run by saving time and aching backs.
But if they came off this easily……

So, he gingerly slid his screwdriver under the next tile…..and POP! And POP, and POP and POP.
Before he knew it he was halfway down the hallway!

Now we have a lovely half finished, non functioning bathroom, and a hallway that looks like this…...

But it’s going to look AMAZING when it’s done.
In the near future ……..

Someday……

Sooner or later …………?
